WOLLONGONG police have urged caution following a trend in thieves breaking into residential premises through unlocked or open doors.

Wollongong crime prevention officer Senior Constable Mary Paterson said there were strategies a homeowner could use to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

"Locking out offenders is the key to burglary prevention," she said.

"Balconies in apartments and homes are a risk and occupants should never leave these doors unlocked or open, even in the warm weather."

Snr Const Paterson advised homeowners to make sure their valuables were not visible and that iPods, laptops, wallets and keys were not left near doors and windows.

Property should also be marked with the owner's driver's licence.

"This will deter offenders and make identification and recovery ... more likely."
